Commissions

Commissioned work is a large portion of activity in the shop. Fulfilling a need, satisfying a desire, designs are formed that are fully functional and easy to live with. Past designs can be redone, tweaked, or entirely new concepts can be created.

A meeting with the client is the starting point. Needs, desires, likes and dislikes, etc. begin the design conversation to start forming ideas and directions to go in. Rough sketches then begin a specific design process. Once a firm concept is developed through rough sketching, the sketches are then “cleaned up”, by going to 1/8 scaled hardline drawings typically in plan, side, and front views of the new piece. A second meeting with the client is scheduled to look at the concept(s). Here the ideas are shown for review and feedback. Permission is granted to proceed, or if any changes are needed, these are noted and integrated into the design concept. Together, we do whatever is needed to arrive at the “yes” moment. When that moment is achieved then a full scale hardline drawing is made on MDF, a light colored and hard material which is excellent for drawing. It is essentially a portable drawing board, which gives us the ability to place a full-scale version of the project concept into the space in which it will live. Very visual, very clear, very concise. If needed, final tweaks are done at this point.
Mock-ups? Along with the full scale MDF drawing, at times a partial mockup will be presented as well. A table leg that we would like to see from a three-quarter view would be a good example of this. Chairs are always fully mocked up, to make sure they work visually in 360 degrees, as well as test sitting for comfort!
